Like half the US Population, I had to replace the compressor after it was 6 months out of warranty. I was surprised at how little refrigerant was needed, but it was fine.

Fast forward 8 years and the thing stops cooling and the freezer is warm/food ruined. I put my manifold on the low side to read the pressure and it was basically zero. I then realized that I couldn’t find the ‘proper’ pressure so I loaded the R134 and turned the valve on for [literally] on-oneMississippi-off and the pressure read around 4 lbs.

The fridge started cooling (37.5 degrees) and the freezer started freezing (11 degrees).

21 days later the fridge was still 37-36 but the freezer was 1 degree with an ice buildup so bad we had to use a crowbar to open the door.

Before I do anything … with the exception of draining, evacuating and refilling, I need to know that proper readings for a properly charged unit.

THAT – and any suggestions anyone has.

It sounds like the sealed system is fine and does not need to be worked on. From what is described, it sounds like you have an air leak that is causing ice to accumulate around the door. This is commonly caused by a door being left slightly open or a door gasket having an air gap in a section usually near the bottom or top. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide sealed system testing or repair information aside from identifying if there is a sealed system issue.
