Freezer Half Freezing

I have a side by side fridge/freezer and it seems like the fridge is kinda of cool, keeping drinks cooler. But the freezer is not freezing at all. Took apart and can view coils in back of freezer, they seemed to have ice on the top of the coils. Defrosted them and plugged back in. Ice formed again on just the top of the coils and seems like the top of the freezer is trying to cool, but the bottom is completely warm with no ice forming. Help is greatly appreciated!

Sounds like your refrig. is low on freon, which means you have a leak in the sealed system.

How old is it? R12 is pretty hard to get these days not mention a leak will continue to lose freon unless it is found and sealed.

Thanks. Would it be leaking like a liquid? because there is no signs of fluids anywhere. Or would it be evaporating like a gas. This is a small strange smell sometimes but no idea if that is related

The leak or leaks would be very small. You would never be able to smell it. It probably took months/year to leak out enough Freon to affect the cooling. Now it has so little left that it can’t even frost the whole evaporator coil over.

Freon is a gas, but under high pressure it becomes liquid. Finding and sealing Freon leaks is very time consuming and difficult.
