For the past month, the freezer is not freezing everything and the refrigerator isn’t really cold enough. If the door is refrigerator door is left open for any length of time (ie: for cleaning), both the refrigerator and freezer warm up and it take a couple of days for them to get back to the temp. they were. And that temp. is barely enough to do the job.
About six months ago I replaced the starter/overload switch which burnt up. Now I’m wondering if that has something to do with this or if it’s the thermostat. Or should I just trash it!!!
Is the compressor cycling?
If yes then the probable cause is the thermostat.
Does adjusting the thermostat temperature do anything?
Is the evaporator fan running?
This is required to have efficient cooling in the unit.
If the compressor is on all the time and the evaporator fan runs then it may be a defrost or a sealed system problem.
Since you did not say that you had to manually defrost the unit I am leaning towards a sealed system problem.
Remove the cover from inside the freezer so you can inspect the evaporator coils.
If there is just frost in one area (usually where the freon enters the coils) then you are low on freon and it will be an expensive repair.

Did this and yes, there is frost in just one area where the freon enters the coils. Guess it’s time for a new one.
