Replaced overload/relay but may have reversed wiring. (white and red to relay and blue to O/L. I heard the compressor and fan running but when I came back, fan and compressor were dead and the compressor hot to the touch.
Symptoms - Lights work, fan and compressor dead. There is continuity between each pair of pins on the compressor. When unplugged and plugged back in, just a couple of clicks in the control panel.
Did I fry the compressor or the O/L Relay?
Is there a reset process or a linkable fuse?
What are my next few steps?
Could havery a bad compressor make sure you are getting 120 volts to the overload on it and if you did screw up the wiring try reversing it again red to overload the wite and blue should go to relay
I will test it in a few days. In the meanwhile, shouldn’t the fan be running even though the compressor might be bad? As I mentioned, there’s electricity to the lights and ice maker, but the fan is inoperative.
I have learned from reading the posts that there can be many causes for the fan/compressor to fail. The most common cause is a bad relay/overload, but it can also be a thermal fuse (link), an issue with the control panel, thermostat, defrost cuycle, etc. So, in what order should each of these be considered? Thanks for your help.
Depends. Some fans only when compressor runs so if compressor won’t start neither will the fan. Check the fan to see if you have voltage. If you do your bad fan could have caused the compressor problems
