and I have the same dryer, same problem, but I can’t tell for sure if the squeak is coming from the right side or not. can I take the bearings and and visually tell if they are bad? If so, what do bad ones look like? thanks
It is difficult to tell if a bearing is bad, but if you remove the bearing, clean it and then reinstall it, the noise may change or go away. Then at least you know if the noise is due to the bearing or not.
Replace the bearing, that is your problem. When you remove the old bearing, be sure to clean the area out with some nail polish remover. When you asked what a bad bearing looks like, you will see a dark color looking grease. The would be the bearing bleading. What a great dryer. Top Loader. Tom ApplianceEducator.com
The bearing comes as a kit and it is actually not a bearing but a brass bushing so you will not find any grease. The new bearing kit comes with a thin white lubricant that should not be cleaned off prior to installation. Contact Fisher & Paykel and see if you can get the part from them, or they may refer you to an authorized servicer. If you have any trouble getting the kit, let me know as I usually have them in stock.
that is so wrong. there is no greese, that comes with that bearing. if parts select cannot sell you that bearing, i can. i am a fisher & paykel rep. tom www.applianceeducator.com/parts.html
I am praying one of you guys sees this quick!! I am in the process of replacing the bearing mentioned above and the inlet bearing retain er (the gold ring with holes that you screw into place before putting on the thrust washer-at least I think these are the correct names) does not lay flush against the plate because the bearing diameter seems too big. I guess the other was worn down, but should the retainer stand out about 1cm from the plate? Seems like when I put in the screws it will be strained. Does this sound right?
I finally figured out how to put that ring on and now my dryer is purring like kitten. thank you guys so much for operating a forum where you don’t charge for your expert advice. If you ever need advice on babies (I’m a neonatal nurse), I’m your girl!
I went to school with a Lisa Robinson. It was in the the bronx. In New York City. It was a PS 97. Just wondering if it was you. Tom ApplianceEducator.com
How much did it cost for the bearings? I just found out the same happened to my F&P top loader. Also… did the kit include that brass retainer ring with the five screw holes in it? When I took off the silver cover I found the center of this piece was sheared off the little tension arms that get screwed into the drum… lots of black graphite or grindings under the cover too.
I haven’t tried taking out the bushing/bearing yet.
Also… where’ did you order the parts? How long to get them?
I read this thread with interest, because I also have been having the squeaking problem.
So I tried to take the bearing cover off. I turned the bolt for an hour (with 5/32 hex wrench) and it just wouldn’t come off … I must be doing something very wrong. In the end I put a hex drill bit on my drill and tried to loosen it. The cover then spun round and round repeatedly but the cover would not come off. In the end I gave up, and retightened the bolt.
'Course, now the squeaking is gone, but the dryer now rasps.
Hi,
I’ve read this thread and have narrowed my noise to the bearing. I removed the old one to confirm the brass bushing is worn. The shaft (bolt) that the bushing goes on is also worn. There is a new one in the kit but how do I remove the old one? Do I need to remove the drum? It is not readily accessible by removing the side panel since there is another panel that is riveted on, covering outside access to the drum. I tried a socket wrench to no avail. Is a wrench from the interior of the unit the right way to go and I just need to break the seal?
