film on microwave door

The glass door to my microwave has a metal grid over the glass and then some plastic film that is over the grid. The film appears to be damaged and I see that it has a part # AP2964287. What purpose does this peel and stick film serve. I removed it to clean the door and grid…the glass appears to be stained, but can be cleaned. Do I need to replace this peel and stick film or can the microwave be operated safely without it?

I have the same problem. The glass is stained. I peeled back alittle of the fiilm. The film and glass is dirty, rusty looking. Did you find out anything? I talked to parts specialitst and buying the whole door has been discontinued. I could buy the glass insert and film but do not know how to take apart. I was told to take the chock out first which is the inside outer frame and use a putty knife and I could break it while trying. Don’t know if any of this is worth it.

I actually found the film online…went to an appliance parts website. All that was needed was to peel off the old and replace it. It cost about $12 from what I remember.

Hi, I have found film online. I have asked many technitions online getting different answers. I was told not to peel back film as protection from radiation. Then why is it a person can buy it at parts store. I was told by one the door is doubled glass and stain is between glass and whole door needs to be taken apart and choke comes off first and can easliy break. One repair service told me 9 times out of 10 the choke breaks. I just want to know simply put, if I take off film will the glass come clean and what cleaner can I use to clean it. Realizing I will be trying to clean glass with the wire mesh attached to it. Wondering if I can get the stain off with mesh on it. Am I wasting my time. Any help is appreciated

I peeled back more of sticky film and washed it with a grease remover. It cleaned up better but stained still on other side of wire mesh is still there. Someone please tell me what will take off stain. Is it even possible to lift dirt behind wire mesh. I scotched taped it back on for now.

I used an old toothbrush and cleaned the grid with some sort of all purpose cleaner spray. I rinsed with a little water & allowed it to dry before putting on the new film.
