We have a Sears Kenmore dishwasher with a plastic tub/liner. The tub recently sprang a leak under a portion of the heating element and the tub was replaced through a lifetime warranty on the tub/liner from Sears. Since the failure/leak occurred directly under a portion of the heating element, does this mean that the element is faulty and should also be replaced?
Your theory that a spoon or other conductor falling on the element sounds very probable. Since a replacement element would run me about $75.00 and since the dishwasher is 12 years old, I think that I will not replace the element as the rest of the machine will probably give out before there is another burn-thru. - in which case i still have my full replacement warranty.
