F2 error during clean

I have a built in Ge oven JTP15BW2BB purchased in 1998. When I try to use the self clean I get a code “F2” after 1 hour. I have to turn the breaker off for a while for it to clear. I don’t know if it would be worth it to call a repair man and my husband is a great handy man and an electrician so I am sure he could fix it if I can tell him what to look for. All else on the oven works just fine. Can you help?

Behind the control panel is a cooling fan. Either the cooling fan is not working, or (most likely) the screen behind the fan is clogged with dust… F2 during clean is an over heat error in the control panel section. You can remove the control panel by removing the 3 screws under the panel, then lift up and off…Make sure you turn the breaker off first…

I can hear a fan blowing while it is working. Is that the same fan you are referring to? Is this the only thing it can be. Things won’t go flying when you take that cover off will they?

I guarantee you the screen is clogged if you hear the fan running. No, nothing will go flying when you remove the panel. When you get in there, remove the fan and get rid of that screen.

Ok my husband just took the screen out and I have just started the clean cycle. Will post results in a bit. Thank you very much!!!

OMG!!! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. My oven has been cleaning for 3 hours so I would say it is fixed. It has been years since I have been able to clean my oven properly. No telling how much money this saved us. This is a great site and I am spreading the word.

SWEET!!! Your welcome

I charge $186 to remove the screen

You are the man!!!
Same oven, same problem, wife was ready to call repair man. Searched the Internet and found you solution above and sounded like good advice. Removed the screen and the oven works perfectly. Airflow at high temp now able to be controlled by the oven fan with the increased efficency allowing adequate airflow. Thank you, thank you

At $186 a “rescue” you should be able to weather the curent economy.

Thanks so much for the info!! I have the same oven, GE JTP15, purchased back in 1997 and have had the F2 error after about 1 hour when cleaning for some time. My husband and I followed your suggestion, removed the screen (which was clogged) and set the CLEAN cycle to 4 hours.. worked like a charm!! Yay!

GREAT advice. Pushed screen aside; it was clogged. Shame on GE for design that is sure to fail. Thanks for info.

This is a great site and thanks a million to the original poster who asked the question and also the poster who provided the excellent answer! I shudder to think of all of the people that have paid hundreds for service calls to repair something so simple that was caused by a poor design.

This applies at least to the following GE built-in oven models: JKP15, JRP15, JTP15.

I discovered the problem when I got the F2 error during the first time I ever utilized the self cleaning function. Obviously the extreme temperature of the oven during this operation created a large amount heat behind the control panel that the fan could not remove due to the blocked filter.

In addition, the control panel fan has been running for hours longer than it should every time I used the oven for about 10 years! Per the answer that was given, I removed (tore out) the fan filter completely.

Looking forward to enjoying the greatly reduced fan run times!

Just found this website and what has been described previously is exactly what i have been experiencing with my oven! My husband took off control panel and the screen was covered in dust. I have high hopes that this will fix the problem!

I have the same issue with f2 error. The oven is locked flashing f2 fau le and i cant turn off the oven. Any advice?

Wow. Please add me to the list of folks offering a big “thank you” for the info in this thread. I’m hardly a handyman, but this was an easy fix. Thanks again.

Hello friend were you able to sort out the F2 error problem while cleaning oven? I am facing similar problem so can you share some information to help me out? Waiting for reply

Haven’t been able to use the self cleaning feature for years. When I first got the F2 code, I did a Google search and “bad heat sensor” came up. Thinking service call and big money, I didn’t do anything. Recently, I read your solution. Within about 5 minutes and following your directions, I was able to remove the clogged screen and the self cleaning feature is working correctly. Thank you!

I have the same type of stove with the same issue but cannot seem to find the fan. Am I missing something? Please help.

I was able to remove the control panel and can see the screen behind the fan is totally clogged. How do you remove the screen? the fan is bolted to the back of the panel and the screen is behind the fan. Thanks for your help!

How did you remove the screen? Its behind the fan and the fan is bolted to the back of the oven.
