Electric dryer blower wheel

The plastic exhaust blower wheel cracked in half across it’s width and several of it’s blades shattered as well. The dryer was running when it happened. As far as I can tell the motor was still operating. Do these wheels usually crack due to age/wear or is the motor itself more likely to be the problem?

Not common but it does happen.
I doubt it is the motor as long as the motor is still properly secured.
See Item Item 19 in section 7.
You may also want to replace the clamp just to be safe.

With luck nothing else blew, you lost air flow and that can blow thermal fuses/cut-offs.
The unit does have a hi-limit thermostat which should have cut power to the heating coil.

Thanks denman. I’m pretty sure the motor is fine. I was actually standing a few feet away from the dryer when the wheel broke, I was able to shut it off within a few seconds. It didn’t have time to trip the fuses. I’ve made several repairs to this dryer over the years, it just may be time for a new one. Although I might make the repair and keep this one for my hunting gear. Thanks again.

I would open it up and see what if any other parts need replacing.

Check the belt, rear rollers, idler roller, internal seals including the drum seals, front drum support glides.
Then you will know what a basic overhaul will cost you.

Yeah, I already did that. Based on that cost and the cost of previous repairs I’m leaning toward a new dryer. But it may make sense to do the repairs just to use the dryer exclusively for scent control clothing. Convincing my better half is the real issue. Thanks again.
