Dryer Won't Start

I have an older Maytag dryer, when I try to start it, the power does not come on. I do hear the timer running down, but the light does not come on at all and the dryer does not start. Could this be a faulty start switch or some other issue?

The first thing I would do is check the thermal fuse (#5 on the diagram) and the door switch (#8 on the diagram) for continuity.
