I’m trying to determine what the issue is with this dryer. When running in the Low heat or High heat cycles it’s getting way too hot. So hot it smells like something is burning. I’ve cleaned out the venting system and have even ran it without the hose connected and get the same result. I’ve researched this a little and looks like it might be the cycle thermostat?? I guess I’m just looking for confirmation. Could it be the heating element on it’s way out? Thanks in advance.
A Model Number may help. You need a wiring diagram so you can see how the temperatures are set/regulated.

This is a possibility

No.
But it could be a grounded element. The element has sagged or broken and is touching the case so that it runs all the time regardless of what the thermostat is doing.
Hey thanks denman, The model number is TEDS740PQ0. I’ll search for a wiring diagram but it’s all kind of foreign to me. I’ve looked at the element and I don’t notice any individual broken elements or and sagging touching the casing. But the casing looks toasted on one half while the other side looks fine. I don’t know if that’s just a result of the whole thing getting too hot or if just that part of the whole element is getting too hot. Thanks for your help in advance.

When you had it off the vent did you check the air flow?
Sometimes blower wheel can come loose/crack and slip on the motor shaft.
Check that the seals etc. in the air path are OK.
The blower pulls air over the heating coil then trough the drum and pushes it out the exhaust. If there is a leak before the blower where the operating thermostat is mounted it will run hotter than it should.
It is a possibility that the operating thermostat is bad, especially when high heat and low heat both run too hot.
If you do decide to change it make sure that you note where the wires go. This is a 4 wire thermostat, 2 fot it’s contacts and 2 for it’s internal heater.
The airflow is good so I think we’re fine there.

No, this is the hi-limit thermostat
The operating (cycling) thermostat is AP3131939 Item 8 in Section 1.
Well, I replaced the operating (cycling) thermostat and it’s still running too hot. When I start it up after about 90 seconds it starts to smell like it’s burning. Any other ideas?
Did you check for a grounded element as mentioned in my first post?
Yeah, as far as I can tell the elements look good. There isn’t one that looks out of place or touching anything else. But the piece of metal that divides the two sides of the element is black on one half. So maybe one half of the element is getting too hot. Have you heard of this before? Again thanks for all the help.

No.
I would think that if it is black either something has gotten into the heater and burned (re: lint etc.) or it has arced/sparked to the case.
