Dryer shuts off and extremely hot

Dryer runs for a few minutes and shuts off. It gets extremely hot during this short time. What are some possible solutions to fix the problem?

Hi.

The first thing to check is the air flow through the dryer and the vents.
Remove the vent hose from the back of the dryer and run one load of laundry. If it’s fine then the vent is blocked.

If not - disassemble the dryer and clean the blower housing, chute at the back.

Thank you. Post the results.

Thanks Simon, took vent loose and removed and cleaned chute. Still same problem. Ran dryer on fluff air and it completed full cycle but when put on heat cycle ran for about 10 minutes and shut off. Could this be the motor or a sensor problem?

Hi.

Most likely the motor’s overload opens and when it cools down it work again. But the overheating is related to the bad air circulation. You may check the exhaust temperature without the vent hose and if it’s more then 155*F and the dryer is still heating up - replace the cycling thermostat

Run the dryer on Timed.

Simon.

I have a westinghouse/auto dry, older (yellow). It had a hole in the lint trap the size of a quarter, we have cleaned everything we can see out of all moving parts. Could it be ssomething else?

Simon, Thanks for the information. I took the dryer apart and there was lint around the motor. I vacuumed all dust out and ran it on timed and it finished the complete cycle. I checked the exhaust and it was 152 during the cycle. Must have been the lint and the heat causing the motor to kick out. Again thanks for the info.

You are welcome.
