Main Symptom: Heats up before started
What happens & when:
Wife noticed top of dryer too hot to touch. Had to turn off.
Next day wife smelled burning plastic. Dryer had not been started. Top too hot to touch. Had to unplug.

Parts or tests already tried:
Plugged dryer in and it got before starting.
Heat stays off if timer is in OFF position.
Heat starts if timer is in any selection but OFF but start button has not been pressed.
Tried other controls in all positions. Same result.

This looks more like the serial # rather than the model#.

Right you are. Model is LE580XMN1.
Will have to go back and correct records I made for this 40+ year old machine.
Please recheck, I got LE5800XMW1 to work for me.
Dryer Heating Element
Def check the heating element.

LE5800XMN1 is what is printed on the dryer when you open the door. The one in the picture looks like what is in the dryer. I replaced it in 2019.
The dryer needed seal at the exhaust and the one for the drum. We are replacing the unit with a new Whirlpool dryer that has similar controls. I gutted all the components including the motor and the belt that I replaced a few years ago.
The element was grounding.
