I have a Maytag Dryer Model # MDG8400AWW with a brand new plastic timer. The dryer heats but the timer doesn’t move in any mode. I had replaced the timer due to the same problem and only dried two loads of wash before timer didn’t move again.
I have been researching this problem on the internet and came up with this post which is very similar to my problem. My question is, is there a timer issue with this machine or is it something other than the timer? Is there more than one timer for the machine? Was there a defective batch of timers?

Are you willing to proceed with the diagnosis yourself? You have to have a simple multimeter to do some tests. Let us know and we’ll guide you through.

I am so happy you responded. I am assuming the internet post from the other owner doesn’t lead you to believe it might be a defective (wrong) timer problem.
I just repaired a Carrier Furnace that had a defective circut board, so I believe I have the determination and skill level when directed to solve this problem.
Yes I have a multi-meter and am a half-way decent handyman. The unit is at my 88 year old mom’s house that is five miles from me, but if you can give me some starting point tests on the dryer I would be able to check them out and move forward from there.
I have read a lot of the other “timer doesn’t work” posts and have never seen where the poster finally stated they solved the problem. Hopefully I will be the first.
I was curious if one could make a timer testor by taking an extension cord and cutting off the female end and crimping on two insulated connectors to slide onto the clock timer contacts then plug the cord into an oulet to see if the clock runs?

Hi John,
Just to begin with: post the serial number of the dryer and the part number of the timer currently installed. Maytag had redesigned the timer a few times and used different part numbers for dryers with different serial numbers.

The numbers you posted have nothing to do with a valued Maytag part number. There are three different part numbers listed for this model and they all consist of eight numbers and start with 3300. The correct part number for the timer in accordance with the model and serial numbers is 33002855.
You have to check the timer motor and the proper voltage (120 VAC) to the timer motor as described in the Service manual, using the wiring diagram which should be in the control compartment.

If there is no proper voltage to the timer motor, the problem can be a bad dryness/display assembly (#13 on the diagram).

Thanks for the tips. I will do the test tomoorrow. I hope your analysis is correct. I was going to tell you earlier that the dryness display was always showing damp clothes when there were no clothes in the dryer and it was heating on time dry with no movement of the timer.

I got 118 VAC to the timer via the larger black wire and small yellow wire coming from the power cord. This was taken with the plug disconnected and connected. The voltage on the red wire (when the timer is engaged and plugged in) is 118 VAC, which goes to the temperature control. I was taking the reading by going to ground with the black test meter lead. Should one always do a test by grounding the black lead rather than to the common?
I am going to replace the little dryness circuit board as you suggested. I am curious if the neutral to the timer motor has been compromised so the timer isn’t running. I am assuming that the hot and neutral leads come from the little circuit board. Should I have been taken a voltage test on the two small wires that run the little timer motor?
I looked at the three wiring diagrams via the Internet link you provided and wasn’t sure which one to use. I couldn’t find the diagram that might come with the machine.

I too am having the EXACT same problem that John is seeing. About a month ago, my Maytag MDG8400AWW dryer (serial number 228964411CR) timer stopped moving.
I did a little research and ordered a replacement Timer (33002855) from APP. That did not fix the problem.
I then ordered a replacement the Sensor Assembly (33002734). I examined it before I replaced it and visually it was IDENTICAL to the one that is currently in there, including the PCB assembly number on the circuit board.
When I put the new board in, it worked for about 10 minutes and then all of a sudden I heard a pop and the sensor light was out and there was a burnt smell. I turned it off and unplugged the dryer to find that the Q2 component on the board had fried, all the way to where the Blue (34) and Brown (15) are on the connector.
I am currently stumped. I am not sure if I just got a defective Sensor Assembly.
Just wondering if you could give me any advice?

I dd the same exact fix as you did with the exact same result. After that hapened I felt soooo frustrated and technically incapable of trouble shooting this appliance that I went to my appliance parts store near by and hung out to talk to an appliance repairman coming in for parts.
A really nice repairman said that that dryer has always been difficult to diagnois and he said to foget trying to fix it and get something different than that model. I took his advice and have been so happy.
I am hoping that you will finally figure out what causes the circut board to short out and how much it actually costs you to resolve the problem.

So far, I have spent about $70 on a timer and $25 on the intellisensor board. I might try to get a new board and put it in with the new timer…
Still cheaper than a service call…

Just to make sure you understand that my fix was exactly what you are proposing. The new circuit board blew up with a neew timer. Do you have your old circuit board? When I looked at my old board it was also blown up. So on my dryer I went through two timers (thinking the first timer was the problem) and one circuit board.
Something other than the timer is causing the circuit board to blow up.
