Drum Support Rollers for Kenmore

Hello,

I am installing new drum support rollers for this old Kenmore from 1981,
and am not sure if I am supposed to grease the shaft before I install the new rollers. It seems like it should have some kind of lubrication–any answers?

Wipe the posts clean. Don’t add any lube. The lint in the machine would soon make it a sticky mess.

The sound usually associated with the rollers is more of a rumble. A screeching noise usually indicates a bad idler or metal against metal. There is a repair kit that includes rollers, idler and a replacement belt for Kenmore/Whirlpool dryers. It is used for older units, and will void warranty for newer units, although it is made by Whirlpool.

Thanks, I mentioned screeching because the posts and the interior of the roller are both metal. The rollers that I removed seemed like they may have had lubrication on them at some point, because at the ends of the sleeve there was a slight bit of black oily or greasy residue, but the posts were shiny and chrome-like without lubrication… I wiped the posts off and installed the new rollers without any lubrication and this dryer is finally quiet again. It was rumbling quite loudly for a bit before due to a broken support roller.
