Does Bake Element Need to be Replaced?

How do I tell if the Bake Element is broken? I don’t have any tools to check the wiring, starter, etc. There’s no “click” sound like before when I’d turn it on and it’d make every 15 min. or so during heating. The two tiny triangular supports keeping the bake element from touching the oven floor broke off recently. Shortly after the bake element itself caught on fire (very small) in the front where it comes in contract with the oven floor. It appears the element has holes where it caught fire though I’m not positive having no experience. Here’s a pic: tinypic . com/view.php?pic=14t7ec9&s=4

Thank you.

Very likely the Bake element has gone bad. For more reliable diagnosis it has to be tested for continuity with an ohmmeter.

Thank you Gene. How would I use an ohmmeter to check for continuity? Also, I was using it basically as a toaster and would turn it on to 500 degrees. A few times I forgot to turn it off and left it on too long and I think that’s how the legs or little supports fell off the element. Is it okay to use it like that as long as I remember to turn it off once I’m done? The reason is I can never find a toaster that works well without turning off. If you know of one that’d be great too. Thanks again.

It is absolutely not safe to use it that way. It can be caught on fire.

Is it okay to use the broil function this way? If I keep an eye on it and turn it off after about 5 min.? Thank you.

Which way?

Gene.

Oh, sorry. I mean is it okay to use the broiler as a toaster for like 5-7 min.? It only takes about that long to toast bread both sides. And I always turn it off right after I’m done. Thanks.

Just to make sure if the first layer of the element is scraped off or burnt off at all the element won’t work? I just want to make sure that’s what’s wrong because I don’t want to buy an ohmmeter as well. But the element definately feels and looks like a layer of it has burnt off. And it stopped working right after that.

I do not see anything wrong with it.

If there is a visible damage in any part of the element, replace it.

Gene,

Thank you my man! Just installed the new one, works great!

What do you do with the broken element? Can it be repaired or just throw away?

You are welcome. I’m glad you were able to fix it.

Gene.

The old part is just piece of trash.
