I have a GE GSD6660 (from 2003) dishwasher that is not cleaning properly.
I’ve tried a few types of detergants, gels, powders.
I’ve cleaned the inside by hand, I’ve ran cycles with vinegar and baking soda too. but I’m still having this issue.
After the cycle, ( and I choose extra hot wash) the dishes are not very clean, and in many cases dirtier. For example glasses that we used for drink water are now cloudy with a film on them, almost like dirty water was used.
Some of the dishes/glasses have this greasy film on them too.
Originally I thought this was because they changed out the detergant with phosphate, but our neighbors using the same detergant aren’t having this issue.
I’ve taking the spray arms off, and cleaned them out.
On the bottom there is a “stainless steel” grate, where I am guessing water drains. Does that come off some how, and I need to clean underneath?
Any thoughts?

You can get into the sump from up top. See attachment.
Check/clean the filter, the sump and the chopper.
Be careful when checking the sump often there is broken glass in it.
You may also want to check your water level. Most units fill to just under the heating element. If you think it may be low add a couple quarts of hot water after each fill during a cycle. Just be careful to not overfill the unit. If the dishes are now clean then fill is probably your problem.
Low fill is often caused by a partial plug of the screen filter on the input side of the water valve. Remove the valve and check/clean the screen. Do not permanently remove the screen. It is there to keep crud out of the valve which could hold it open and cause a flood.

Thanks for the tips. I tried giving it a good cleaning, I did get into the sump area and cleaned out a fair amount of crud, I checked the sprayer arms again and looked for other dirt.
Then I ran a cycle about 60% full .. and same issue, it seems the the issue with the “film” is mostly in the top rack, as the glasses look horrible.
At this point I’m debating looking for a new one or trying to fix this 8 year old model.
If you have any other thoughts , please let me know.
Are you using rinse aid?
If yes is it actually being dispensed.
Yes, JetDry, and I’ll guess yes, as the level has been declining over the week.
Are the dishes drying OK?
Perhaps there is a problem with the heating element?
Also I would check that the water entering the unit is at least 120 degrees F.
Are the dishes now clean other than a film on them.
If yes you may want to try using less detergent.
dishes are dry .. except glass in the top have water in some of them.
The dishes are very hot, I can’t pick them up until they cool off.
I’ve tried different detergents, cascade gel, powder, tablets, and finish tablets. I could try shaving some off the tablet to see if it maske a difference, but I’m thinking there is something else that must be up.

Thanks, that really helped. I didn’t know that.
Remove the bottom plate near the floor. The feet should be adjustable up/down. Locate the over flow sensor inside the dishwasher machine. If it is at the front, lower the rear feet to let more water into the machine. Or, you can raise the front feet. If the over flow sensor is to the mid right inside the dishwasher machine, lower the front and rear left feet, or raise the right front and rear feet. There may be also be a restriction on the feeding tube of the inlet water. The exhaust water, dirty, should not be made go up too far before entering the drain pipe. Lower the highest spot. Look underneath the filter inside the dishwasher machine to see if anything is restricting the outlet of dirty water. Use detergent that dissolves food proteins and softens the water for a clean shine.
