Brand: Kenmore / Whirlpool
Model Number: 665.68601891
Main Symptom: Warm Freezer
What happens & when: Timer will not start after defrost cycle
Defrost timer and freezer thermostat just replaced. Evaporator not icing up. Will cool properly after I bang on defrost timer when it stops turning. Apparently the old defrost timer was not the issue. When the defrost timer has stalled and I turn the refrigerator setting to zero the compressor comes on. The heater comes on when it enters defrost mode.

That’s not a good model number!
My bad … that is the microwave.
Fridge is 106.59502993.
If you bought this timer part# W10822278 and it has a BLACK wire it goes to terminal 2 on the timer. I am wondering if that new thermostat is a OEM part.Hitting around the timer may have closed the contacts on the thermostat and made the compressor come on.Here is your wiring diagram for your model. Yeah looks like the freezer thermostat as OEM part is NLA part number 2203252 and is available as a aftermarket part on like ebay.I don’t have any faith in them! I wonder now if the timer is OEM with that black pig tail like in these instructions??

Whirlpool labeled part and yes to original black wire and floating wire connected to terminal 2. Someone online mentioned one of the original wires to the freezer thermostat was badly tarnished (dark gray versus copper color) and I noticed the same when I spliced in the new Whirlpool labeled thermostat - now wondering it that tarnished wire is hindering that low amount of current and acting as an open circuit? An open would “tell” the timer that freezer is still cold, correct?
I plan to remove my splice on the tarnished freezer thermostat wire, cut it back to untarnished wire, resplice and see if that works. Still curious as to why banging on defrost timer housing turns it back on if it thinks still in defrost mode. Does the defrost timer actually “time” the defrost cycle or just stop timing and wait for the freezer thermostat circuit to open signally end of defrost cycle?
