Defrost Timer Location

I have a defrost issue with my GE gsl22jfpbs. I want to test the defrost timer but cannot locate it. Does this model have a defrost timer or an adaptive defrost module? I have tried searching your wessite for my model number but have found no matching threads.
Thank you.

Am not sure if the following is the same as yours but it may be close or perhaps some of the info will apply .

Check under the unit behind the kick plate for the tech sheet that applies to this unit.

Thank you for your response. This is the service manual for models with digital temp displays. My model has manual temperature control knobs. Otherwise everything looks pretty much the same. However, how do I run diagnostic tests with manual control knobs? Also, there was no tech sheet behind the kick plate.

Sorry do not know how to do this.
On some GE’s there is a wire that has to be swapped on the Control Board.
On some you cannot force a defrost.
Hopefully someone will jump in who has experience on this Model

Getting info on many GE’s is next to impossible.

I think your unit uses a glass type defrost heater, you may want to start with it as they are a known problem.

Many units originally had a single heater and now require a double heater kit.
The single elements were burning out too often.

Thanks for your replies. I’ll try replacing the defrost heater and thermostat, maybe that will do the trick. Any idea what those two items should cost me?

If you do not have a meter to check the heater at least take a look at it, often you can see where it has burned out.

Heater
Part Details - GE HEATER HARNESS DEF, part number: WR51X10101
Is the new 2 element type

Thermostat
Part Details - GE THERMOSTAT DEF, part number: WR50X10068

You may need a couple wire nuts and some silicone sealant or equivalent to install the thermostat. This is if you have to cut the wires to install it. Use the wire nuts and the seal tthe open ends. Also I like to face the open end down so any water from derfost cannot enter the wire nuts.

Give them a call because some of the heater kits include a thermostat. I am not sure about this one.

I ordered the parts from the GE website. The assembly comes with a t-stat and a temp sensor. Total price with shipping and taxes was approx $80. I’ll let you know how it goes. Your help has been much appreciated.

Another quick question… If I take out the “faulty” heater now while I wait a few days for the new one to arrive, will the freezer still run with the heater disconnected?

Yes it should.
It will take a few days for the evaporator coils to ice up again and stop the cooling.
This of coarse depends on how often you open the doors.

I just removed the heater. The coils are totally burned out. I am sure now, that it was the problem. I’ll give you an update after the parts arrive. Thanks.

How much do you think I saved by not calling a repair man?

I would not count your chickens quite yet.

Call is not complete till the unit is up and running properly for at least a couple weeks.

How much you have saved is dependent on a number of things.
Depends on number of calls it takes to repair the problem, what your local travel/labor costs are, how much they mark up the parts etc. etc.
I would say it will definitely be $100.00 or more and if you ended up getting a shady tech a couple hundred or more.

Part arrived and installed successfully. You were right, the replacement heater was a double coil. I replaced the thermostat as well. Freezer has been up and running for about a week. So far so good. Frost is minimal and perhaps most importantly the ice cream is as hard as a rock. I left the evap cover panel off for now to keep an eye on it. I’ll wait another week or so before I reinstall it. Thanks for all your advice!

Sounds like you have it fixed.
Defrost should work even better with the evaporator cover back on as it does keep the defrost heat in the coil area so does a better job.

I have GSL22JFPBS & quick freeze is not really freezing & ice is forming on back of freezer. Does that sound like it needs the heater kit replaced too? Thanks! (Also, ice maker hasn’t worked for ages if you have any quick thoughts on that too!) But the freezer issue not freezing is a bigger concern.

You would be much better off starting your own thread in this forum.

Use “POST NEW TOPIC”

Include in the body a good description of the freezing problem.
Also a description of what the ice maker is doing.

You have to remove the evaporator cover and check the evaporator coils to see if they are heavily iced up. A light coating of frost is normal. Also chech that your evaporator fan is running.
