Just purchased and installed a new defrost timer for ‘old faithful’ - our GE S by S frig which, (except for a troublesome icemaker) always works just fine.
However, I find that overnite the new timer (6 hr. type) is allowing for a too long defrost cycle and temp rises to 55 deg’s. by morning. I see the small adjusting screw on the front of the timer and rotating this screw (by some amount) restores the compressor.
I’m assuming that a 360 deg. rotation of the adjusting screw equals six hours of defrost - is this assumption correct?
I notice that two ‘clicks’ occur at 180 deg’s. apart - so perhaps there are two cycles controlled by this timer?
Anyways, I’m just guessing so if someone could advise me about proper adjustment of the defrost timer - thanks in advance for your time.
V2K04 is partially correct, The defrost thermostat does terminate the defrost cycle, IF the timer dosen’t do it first. The timer that you now have may be a 6hr timer, BUT, if it clicks twice in a 360 degree rotation, Then 1 revolution = 12 hrs. It ALMOST sounds like your timer is “STICKING” in defrost. Will it restart on its own? or do you have to advance it to get it to start.

Well, I’ve not left it alone long enough to find out since the ice cubes were melting together and I did not know when the defrost cycle started, so I did advance the timer first thing in the morning to restart the compressor - the wife insisted that stuff was too warm already then, so I was hoping to shorten the cycle.
Well if it works with the old timer(you’re sure of that?) why are you screwin around with this one? Usually you’re suppose to wait till it doesn’t work before you go repairing it lol
The old one kept me awake all nite with a loud (buzzing/grinding) noise, at first I just disconnected the thing in order to get some sleep - the frig still worked fine, just didn’t defrost & didn’t seem to need to either!
Maybe I should disconnect this one too and just hook it back up when too much ice builds up! LOL
If you put a 9x330 timer in it, It should have a little round window on the silver motor part of the timer, Please re-check your wiring at the timer!!! You SHOULD be able to see the armature inside the motor spinning. It should run ALL of the time that the unit is plugged in!!! If the refer goes into defrost and the motor stops spinning, Its NOT wired correctly.

Even though I took the precaution of numbering the four wires before disconnecting the old timer - I had the sequence reversed on the new one. Oops! I can’t believe that I didn’t fry my new timer - nor is there an ‘adjustment’, just hook it up (right) and it works!
