Defrost is not working. Heater element OK. (When 110v is appllied to it.) Circulating fan OK.
With wires to thermostat are disconnected, it OHMs closed at room temp.
If the freezer is cold, should the thermostat show “closed” ? How cold must it be to check the thermostat? What prceedure do you follow?
Seems like your defrost thermostat is bad, should be open at room temperature.

That is what I would believe also based on all the freezers I worked on in the 60’s and 70’s. Back then they had timer motors an relays.
My freezer has an electonic solid state board and no defrost timer. I did purchase a new defrost t’stat with leads atached. At room temperature, it is “closed”. I guess it will read open when cold but how that works, I don’t know. I have not installed it yet until I can adequately trouble shoot the problem causing the freezer coil not to defrost.
The heating element gets hot when I apply 110v directly to it and the circulating fan is working OK. I have just installed a new motherboard. Still no defrost takes place. The new replacement has more wire connecors on it than the old, but it is made to work on other models as well. I connected the leads on the new to the same places the old one used. No chance of mixing them up. I don’t have a wiring diagram or troubleshooting guide.
You have the wrong thermostat. These special thermostats open at around 50 degrees, but I remember the one for your freezer opens at a higher temperature.
Your refrigerator uses a WR50X10015 (WR50X10068), which is a L-140-30 thermostat. What this means is the thermostat will be closed until it reaches 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Once it opens it will close back when it gets to 110 degrees. The thermostat should never open unless something fails big time or the thermostat is bad. The thermostat doesn’t play a role in determining how long the defrost heater stays on, that is done by the thermistor and the main board. The thermostat is only there for a safety back up. As far as I know all GE side-by-side refrigerator with the main board have this thermostat. If your thermostat is closed at room temperature then it is ok.
With the defrost thermostat ok and the heater ok I suggest replacing the thermistor. It can be the board but the thermistor is a lot more likely and a whole lot cheaper.
