compressor start relays

The compressor on my GE refrigerator had the start relay go out.It is the two piece with the overload seperate. It is one of those brown Klixon relays. When I went to the parts store the parts guy said that I could put just about any start relay on this refrigerator and it would work, because most relays were universal. Is this true? This relay has some numbers on it,and I would like to know if I can indeed put any relay on this refrigerator,or should I try to find one like what came off?

There is some truth to that, but the relays do come in different ratings so I would recommend replacing it with the original one, available at the link below.

Thanks for the reply and the helpful info.

You are very welcome!

You are getting BAD advice. All start relays are NOT the same, the wrong one will blow out your compressor in seconds!!

The RO41/PRO41 is a universal relay that will work on most residential refrigerators, but if the OEM is available, it is best to use it.

On this forum, I never recommend a device like this, no temp. overload protection and very poor power overload protection.

I agree, that is why I recommended the OEM part.
