compressor problem?

have 1949 Crosley Shelvador; may have compressor problem? symptoms;

  1. compressor gets very hot to touch; vibrates
  2. buzzing or whirring sound
  3. turn frig off and buzzing or whirring sound continues
  4. when adjust temperature control, do not hear compressor crank on and off ; but hear buzzing sound
  5. cooling works
  6. freezer gets compacted with ice

concerned that compessor going and about safety ( fire).

any comments will be appreciated as can not find a local repairperson who works with old frig thanks

You may well have a safety issue with the old fridge.Some old refrigertors have used back then a group two refrigerant.This refrigerant call Sulphur DIOXIDE was used in older refrigerator to keep things cold.This gas is TOXIC. It is irritating to breathe and may be slightly flammable.Be carefull not to break any lines when removing the fridge from the house…GOOD LUCK.
