Chest freezer compressor never stops running

We have a Sears Coldspot chest freezer, Model No. 15644, circa 1980. About a month ago I noticed a spark at night when closing the lid. Next day we removed all contents and defrosted the unit. After a full defrost and wipe down, we pulled it away from wall and noticed one badly frayed and one severed wire in the wire harness where wires enter the lid for defrost pull-out and freezer light. I stripped wires to bright copper and repaired with Wago wire connectors. Plugged everything back in and freezer lid light came on (thought it had burned out) and we could hear compressor humming away. Reloaded contents and checked a couple hours later and light frost was already forming inside on the walls. What an incredible freezer! Story doesn’t end well, unfortunately, because ever since that time, the compressor has not stopped running. I’ll wake up in the middle of the night and check to see and also at random times during the day. The compressor simply never stops humming away! Contents are rock hard, but I think we need to remove contents, pull it away from wall, and run some service checks. Please advise as we want to keep this freezer as a member of our family!

Hello, what kind of temperatures are you reading in the freezer? if you see temps way below zero, it may have ruined your thermostat. That model number you gave me does not come up as valid. Send me a picture of the model number serial plate, and I will see if there is anything I can find.

Hi, Dave, and thanks for reaching out. I just walked into utility with a friend and was about to lift the lid on the freezer when the compressor suddenly shut off! I must have checked that compressor well over a hundred times in the last month and it was running every single time until just now. What are the odds? This friend of mine had just stopped by with his fluke temperature sensor and the freezer is registering -3 F. Although we have several gallon jugs of frozen water in the bottom, he seemed to think because it was only maybe 1/3 full that the compressor was maybe having to run a lot to maintain -3 F. The lid seal looks like new with no cracks or deformities of any kind. So, I think we’re good to go because at least I now know it can cycle. Oh, and model number I found is located on a factory paper label stuck underneath the lid, probably a generic model number. Would have to unload contents and pull unit away from wall to get the actual model number somewhere in the back, but since I think we’re good to go, we won’t be doing that. Thanks again!

No problem, hang on to those freezers; they don’t make them like that anymore.
