i’m trying to figure out whats wrong with my fridge. fans run new defrost board and wiring. how do i check my compressor with my ohm meter. both fans work. compressor heats up but no cooling
Here are your parts

And here is a link with info on how to check the compressor

Note: Checking the compressor with a meter does not totally eliminate it as the problem as it could have a mechanical problem. But if a winding is burned out or grounded it does tell you that the compressor is toast.
You say the compressor gets warm but do you hear it running and/or feel it vibrating. If yes then you have a sealed system problem. You could be out/low on freon, the compressor may have an internal mechanical problem or there may be a plug in the sealed system.
In all the above sealed system problems the repair will be expensive as you will need a pro. Also there is no guarantee of a long term fix so usually it is better to put those dollars towards a new fridge.
You said the unit is 5 to 10 years old, it may be worth checking this as the sealed system has a 5 year warranty, I think!!
the compressor is running because it gets hot or at least its humming.i’m just wondering if it could be locked up.all fans and door switch are working just not cooling at all …
Unfortunately it does sound like a sealed system problem.
You could remove the cover in the freezer so you can see the evaporator coils just to be sure they are not cooling.
You could unplug the unit and let the compressor cool down to see if it will start and cool when cold.
Could also try giving the compressor a healthy tap to see if it will unlock.
Both the above would just be temporary fixes.
I am assuming that this unit has not been moved on it’s side recently and that the original problem was no cooling.
unplugged, let sit for a while when plugged back in and turned on the compressor did kick on and is frosting up on the small line below the dryer but coils in freezer are still warm. is there a way to by pass the temp control to rule that part out? can i make a jumper wire to join the black and orange wires i might have to buy a tap to check the freon.
Cannot say for sure as I do not know what the wire colors are.
But sounds OK to me.
Though I do not know what doing that will gain you since the compressor came on it indicates that the thermostat is OK.
i’m getting frost from the small line from dryer to evaporator coils but it dissipates as it goes into the coils. then after a while it dissipates as well like its going into defrost mode.
This may help, note the third paragraph
Filter-dryers and Capillary Tubes |
i think that is my problem … the cap tub is blocking the freon from going through the evaporator… i will tear into it this week and let you know.thanks for all your help !
To fix this, you will need a refrigeration certificate and expensive equipment.
I fixed a few of these, usually I just cut the capillary line with a file, cleaned the bore with a needle, then used high pressure to force oil and contaminents out of the line.
I have never seen one with a clogged dryer, unless the compressor was failing and dumping out burnout contaminents.
I had one that I fixed by heating the capillary with a propane torch while the compressor was running. The compressor high pressure cleaned it all out and dumped it in the evaporator.
Worth a try, but in that case, it was rosin clogging the capillary. You must be careful and wear safety glasses in case you unsolder a joint.
a friend of mine works on big chillers and he believes its clogged as well, hes coming over this week to check it out. it looks like the back up is right at the cap tube cause the frost build up is on the over side of the dryer that goes to the evaporator
