Chain Reaction Failures (GE Money Pit)

Is the replacement part # for this unit, a better design? (in terms of reliability)? I cannot believe the series of costly broken parts caused by one failed component, (either the defrost timer, or the defrost heater).
The ice in the hopper partially thawed, then re-froze, which broke the auger blade, ($35). After cleaning the bin, same thing happened, but this time stripped the gears in the ice maker, ($130). After figuring out it was a defrost issue, I have replaced the thermostat, and the thermistor, (tried the 2 lowest cost components first, about $8 each). Now it is either the $40 heater, or the $140 motherboard, (or both)?
What a horribly designed piece of equipment! (Or, I guess it was a wonderful job, if you are in the business of selling refrigerators, and replacement parts). Disappointed, and venting. And looking for advice on how to tell if I need to replace the board, the heater, or both. Thanks.

Check the defrost heater, if black inside with a gap, it’s blown, just order a new one on this site.
