Can Sears Repair My GE Profile Cooktop/Range?

As stated elsewhere in this forum, my GE jsp38gv1bb ceramic cooktop/range, 15 yrs old, has started acting up. The burners are no longer capable of boiling a 12qt pot of water in a reasonable time. I have replaced one of the switches to see if this was the problem, but no, it still doesn’t get hot enough long enough to do the job. A friend of mine thinks that if set on HIGH, the burner should NEVER cycle off. All of my burners do cycle on and off when set to HIGH. First, is my friend correct? Now I understand that there is a thermostat present which will limit how hot a burner gets. Can my problem be that after 15 yrs the thermostat for the cooktop either failed or is failing? With the current price of a replacement for the whole range($1200 - $2000 ) , I’d much rather have this one repaired. The big question is: CAN it be repaired? Can a Sears serviceperson do it? Does anyone out there have a ballpark figure on the cost to repair it? Thanks.

All the top heating elements in your range have a temperature limiters to prevent the glass overheating and damage to it. That’s why they are cycling “on” & “off”.

Concerning the cooking time, the first thing I would do is make sure there is 240VAC to the range. If the voltage is less than that, it will cause longer cooking time.

If Sears in your area has a good reputation then they probably can help you.
