my stacking washer suddenly quit pumping-out or spinning. I checked that there was no blockage thru the hoses, pump. Suspected the lid switch when it occured on all cycles. When we tested the lid switch, it did not show continuity. When we connected the two wires of the switch together, it worked fine. What are the cons of leaving it this way? (basically removing the lid switch)
Hello.
Do not run you washer with lid switch bypassed! First of all it’s dangerous and secondly you will burn the motor.

A lid switch is like a light switch… it allows current to flow when closed and stops current from flowing when opened.
When the lid is closed, it is the same as having the wires connected permanently… when opened, it stops current and also causes the basket to stop via the brake. This is a safety feature designed to protect users.
I have a friend who bypassed his lid switch, he has done that for over a year now. He is careful and never opens his lid until the washer has stopped the wash cycle completely. I offered to replace it for him, if he bought the switch, he said no, even though I explained it was safer that way.
His washer works fine, and his motor has never had any issues. The switch being bypassed itself does not cause the motor to fail. But, if you had a friend over - or relative over and they were not aware of the danger of opening the lid and the basket not stopping… and they hurt themselves - you are liable to be sued. If you injured yourself beacause you forgot and were not safe, then you would regret it for possibly the rest of your life.
I suggest you replace the lid switch… it is much safer. Also, if you happened to bypass the lid switch and the basket failed, which the manufacturer may still cover, and a tech came out to replace it, your warrantly can be voided because you altered the washer.
Just some thoughts… and besides, they sell the part right on this site.
