Brakes on Maytag top load stuck

The brakes seem to be stuck. The motor can’t drive the drive pulley for SPIN. The pulley can turn until the clutch engages fully and then the belt slips on the motor pulley and heats up and smells.

I have been told to open the brake housing, but do not see how to remove the drive pulley. How is that done?

When I had some of the brake housing screws out, there was a leaking of what appears to tranmission oil. Is that normal? Is some seal up in the transmission failing? What can be done?

Thanks for any prompt replys. The dirty clothes are stacking up.

First,I would pull the top cover of the tub and look for something jamed in there, most probable problem for this dependable care washer.

Since I just replaced the tub seal, I have had all the top end completely apart. Also, there is no problem with wash cycle functions, only spin.

What about the oil coming out of the brake housing?

How does one remove the drive pulley, or do you have to? I have thought it just might come off with the brake housing cover.

I have not tried to pull off the cover as it is. I have had all the cover screws out and the cover did not just fall off, so I presumed the drive pulley is holding it on or it may be rusted and therefore not come off easily.

Help please. As I said before, the dirty clothes are stacking up.

Pull the dust cover off the pulley and remove the c clip and serrated washer, pulley should come off. Be carefull, there is a big spring in there. I would put back all the housing screws before removing the pulley. Then just just remove each screw symetrically to keep the housing even. Inside, you probably will find a rusted brake bearing, or busted brake spring.

So I have fouled up my diagnosis. Normally I make my living by doing dianosis on electronic things and consider myself “not bad on mechanical things” but I have missed this one royally.

I have removed the pulley and checked the braking stuff and nothing seems wrong. The oil inside was limited and normal. Double checking other things, I learned that when I replaced the tub seal, I put the tub cover down too far and it locked up the ability too spin, so it was not the braking, but the cover installed wrong.

Now I have created the bigger problem. The re-installation of the drive pulley includes setting the right position for the little splined “disc with tab” which attaches to the shaft coming through the pulley. The “right position” controls the braking pressure and the clutch pressure. My first attempt at this had the brake nearly off at end of spin and the clutch so tight that it would not slip at start of spin. The clutch slip is used to limit motor current, and I got enough current ( 15 Amps ) to overheat the motor and trip its thermal overload. So I now know what I have to do to correct this (which I wish I had never touched), but there must be a better way than guess and try. That could take all day and still not get it right.

I need a specific way to set the little splined disc with tab. Does anyone know the routine? I would be extremely thankful for the instructions.

 embarrased

When you put the pulley back in, turn the pulley in the spin direction. The pulley should ride up the helix and smoothly release the brakes and the tranny will spin. If this fails to happen, just re-position the serrated washer till it does.
Maybe someone else has a better proceedure.
