I plan to replace the clutch assembly on my Whirlpool direct drive washer (model WTW5540SQ0). If I already have the motor and gearcase assembly removed, is it possible to replace the brake shoes without removing the drive tube assembly, if it appears they need replacement?
You would have to pull it out at least past the brake drum to access the shoes.

Removing the E-ring that holds the shoes on would not allow them to slide out of the drum (assuming I could compress the spring assembly enough to get them back in the drum)?
There are two hooks on the plate that the shoes attach to and the shoes must fit under those hooks. I don’t think you could get them out from under the hooks and I don’t think you could get the spring back in place even if you could get the shoes out, but hey, give it a try. Iv’e never tried it that way. Let us know if it works.

I was not able to pull the tube out more than 1", it came out freely and then clunked to a stop. I took off the plastic gizmo, the cam and the e clip that holds the brake shoes on. I then was able to finagle both brake shoes off.
