Bosch Dishwasher - Error E:61-03

Brand: Bosch
Model Number: SHX9PCM5N/22
Main Symptom: Error Code: E:61-03
What happens & when: Dishwasher will start and run for a period of time just fine. It then stops and displays error E:61-03. Online documentation is conflicting—some sources say it’s a drainage issue, others say it’s a water-heating fault.

I’ve already tried these troubleshooting steps:

  1. Checked the drain hose for clogs.

  2. Looked for any air pockets that would prevent draining.

  3. Cleaned the filter and check any blockages.

  4. Removed the drain pump guard and cleared a small amount of debris behind it; the drain pump spun freely when I reinstalled the guard.

  5. Opened the machine immediately after the error; it was in a hot-water cycle and the water was getting hot but the cycle hadn’t run long enough to reach full temperature

I have already tried the following and it didn’t work:

This is a drain fault for this model, making it think that draining isn’t possible. Does the drain pump run?

One thing it could be if the drain pump does run is the check valve that prevents water backflowing into the tub.

The easiest way to test that is to disconnect the drain hose from where it connects to your home’s drainage system, pour water into the hose, hold the hose up, and check if water is going back into the tub. If it is then you’ll need to replace the check valve 00611320 connecting the drain hose to the sump assembly.

HI Rory,

Thank you for all your suggestions.

I will definitely test to see if the water backs up into the tub and if so will replace the check valve. If that doesn’t work should I be look at replacing the pump?

I pulled the dishwasher out and had to drain line empty into the sync for testing. It was draining, not super fast but it draining. When I initially start the dishwasher it did pump out some water before starting the initial pre-rinse / soak cycle water out with no problem. It only seems like the wash cycle is the issue. The inconsistency is throwing me off.

Thank you!

If the check valve is working properly then I would suspect the pump itself. It may initially drain just fine but then be giving an out-of-range reading later on in the cycle when it is under load. How long does the cycle usually run before getting the code?

Hi Rory,

Thank you so much for your feed back. I apologize for my delay.

So thats the interesting thing its getting an hour and half to two hours into a 3 hour wash before the error arrises. Each time its been 5 or 10 minutes into a hot water cycle when there error is shown. When I open the dishwasher after the error, the water is clean.

In all the other cycles before the error, it pumps out the water fine.

HI Rory,

I pulled dishwasher out and did some testing. I fulled up the train hose and no water backup from the train area. However, water was pouring in through the side vent. How I did have the drain hose up pretty high as I was filling it up in the sink. When I lowered the hose back down the water stopped pouring in via side vent.

I wasn’t sure if that is normal.

That could be your problem, sounds like that check valve is letting water back in. There shouldn’t be any connection to that case break vent from the drain except through the sump.

So it the check valve you sent me or is another check valve? The water was poring in from the size of tub vent. I thought it would come up through to bottom where the pump is located.

Ohhh gotcha, I’ll order a check valve from the link you sent me. Thank you so much!!
