Main Symptom: Bad Pump/Grinding Sound

Parts or tests already tried: I am pretty sure the Main pump unit impeller has disintegrated. My question is… the original pump unit seems to be a metal housing and the replacement looks to be plastic. Can’t be as good right? Unit is at least 17 years old. Never had a problem until now- should I fix? Was $1,000 back then so a new equivalent model would be a lot more.
