basement refridgerator problem GFCI

I have an older 8-10 year old kenmore side by side fridge in my basement. It has been down there for 2 years now without issues. About 3 months ago it would blow the circuit every month or so , now it does it as soon as you plug it in . I called an appliance service person and he said put it on a non-GFCI circuit. That doesnt make sense to me. Is he right ? Since it is in my basement I want it on a GFCI circuit. I wired a new one last month , so it is now on its own 20 amp circuit.
Any ideas what this could be ? Is there something I can test ?

It is not recomended to put a fridg on a ground fault outlet, to many inacessable places for current to leak to ground.
