Agitator on GE stacked washer/dryer

Hi. I have a GE WSM2780WAWAA stacked washer/dryer. The agitator will not spin. The cap on top of the agitator is stripped loose, and the cap stud bolt DOES properly rotate when the washer is cycling. But the actual agitator seems to be ground smooth where it meets the cap stud. I am trying to remove the agitator to see what parts I need, but am having no luck. I have tried to unscrew the cap stud with vise grips. I have also tried to lift the agitator with the belt-slid-under trick… no avail. Help! Im going cross eyed from exploded diagrams and going back and forth up the stairs!!!

Hi Jer

Well the first piece of news is that when GE decided to sell a stacked washer/dryer they also decided it was too much trouble to make one. So they went to the Electrolux Company who make a nice stacked unit under the Frigidaire name, and who also let Sears sell the same unit under the Kenmore name. After what I am sure was long negotiations lasting several minutes they struck a deal and Electrolux allowed GE to sell the Frigidaire model under the GE name. About the only thing GE about your model is the initials “GE” on the cabinet.

This is actually good news because Frigidaire makes a good machine and has a very good service manual to go with it.

Here it is

Now as you can see in the manual in your case the agitator is removed by lifting off the cap and taking out the bolt. It should then pulll off, and if you are having difficulty I can only say keep at it, as there is nothing but the bolt holding it on. If you cannot get the bolt out then the agitator will not come off.
