Agitator not moving...humming noise

Hello, I have a GE washer that the agitator is not moving at all. It makes a humming noise during the wash cycle and that’s all. I can’t get the agitator out either…HELP, PLEASE!!!

Watch a youtube video on how to disassemble a top loader after you removed the unit and have exposed the tub check for the tech sheet under the main console that’s your key to starting tests… jump the lid switch so the unit thinks the lid is closed. Look underneath the unit for motion and where the noise is coming from, check the connections at the motor making sure there good with no loose wires…check for 120v down at the motor windings…check the capacitor after discharging it…check to make sure the gearcase is moving freely and isn’t seized. Check to see if something as simple as the belt just fell off or the pully nut and pully fell off some of these newer top loaders have the pully nut fall right off so everything works it just doesn’t spin or agitates the new cheap whirlpool top loaders are infamous for that…Good luck

Remove the front panel by inserting a putty knife into the groove at the top in line with the lid opening on each side to release the clips while pulling the panel. Tilt the panel out and lift from the cabinet. See if you can freely rotate the motor pulley by hand. This should turn the belt and the main drive pulley. One direction is for agitation and should be easy, the other is for spin and will be a little more difficult as the entire transmission rotates. If it won’t turn in the agitate direction (CCW viewed from below) there may be something caught underneath the agitator. To remove it, place a strap under it and yank upwards forcefully to pop it off. If it does rotate easily but motor just hums when in agitate, you may have a faulty capacitor, motor or timer. You would need to make some measurements with a multimeter to narrow down the problem. If you have a multimeter and know how to use it, I can help further.

Thank you to both of you!! I’ll watch a video on how to take it out. I also have a multimeter.

Here is a good video on how to dismantle your washer. For right now, you just need to remove the front panel to do the checks I gave you.
