Main Symptom: ice dispenser flap not closing/frosting over
What happens & when: this has been a problem for some time causing ice dispenser to not work. I can see the release screws, but can’t figure out how to release them

For the GE Monogram ZISS420DRBS, the trick is that the screws you can see around the dispenser are not the first thing to release. You need to remove the dispenser control/touch panel first.

  1. Shut power off to the refrigerator.
  2. Look along the bottom edge of the dispenser control panel, just above the ice/water opening. There are small access/release points along that lower edge.
  3. Use a small flat screwdriver or small Allen wrench at the release points and push upward while pulling the bottom of the control panel outward. Owners of this ZISS420 series specifically report two release holes that allow the panel to pop free.
  4. Once the bottom releases, lift the control panel upward and pull it out. Disconnect the wiring connectors. The GE service manual describes the same basic movement: remove the bottom retaining point, then lift up and pull the bottom outward.
  5. Behind the control panel you’ll find the four Phillips screws holding the dispenser backing panel. Remove those four screws and the backing panel comes forward.
  6. That exposes the ice chute flap, return spring/crank and duct-door solenoid.

Given your symptom—flap stays partly open → warm/moist air enters → chute frosts over → ice eventually won’t dispense—pay particular attention to the duct-door solenoid. This series is known for the solenoid plunger becoming corroded/rusted and sticking. There are reports on the ZISS420 specifically where replacing the solenoid corrected exactly this flap/frost problem.

Important: Don’t pry deeply behind the face of the control panel. Work only at that thin bottom seam/release area; the plastic and wiring are easy to damage.
