5E code on samsung washer

Intermittently, my samsung WF42N5200AP/A2 will stop the cycle and give an error code of 5E. I checked the filter - not clogged. Drain hose is only 7" into the drain pipe. No odd noises from the drain pump What should I check next

For the Samsung WF42N5200AP/A2 front-load washer, here are two easy ways to access the built-in diagnostics:

Service / Diagnostic Mode

  1. Turn the washer ON (don’t start a cycle).

  2. Press and hold Delay End and Soil Level together for about 3 seconds.

  3. You should hear a chime and see “00” or “0000” on the display, indicating you’ve entered Service Mode.

  4. Press Spin to view any stored error codes.

  5. Turn the cycle selector knob to scroll through saved codes. If no codes are stored, the display may show “–”.

Smart Install Diagnostic Test

Many Samsung models also include an automated self-test:

  1. Turn the washer ON.

  2. Set Delay End to 17 hours.

  3. Press and hold Start for about 7–10 seconds until “AS” appears on the display.

  4. Press Start again to begin the automatic diagnostic routine.

The washer will run through a series of checks, including components like the door lock, water valves, drain pump, and spin system. If a problem is detected, an error code will be displayed to help pinpoint the issue.

If you run into any error codes or need help interpreting the results, feel free to share them and I’ll be happy to help.

Hi Shopperbob,

Have you actually removed the drain pump and checked it for any clogs? Also, keep in mind that a drain pump doesn’t always make noise when it’s failing. It could be overheating after a couple of loads and then stopping intermittently.

I would keep track of how many loads you run before the problem starts occurring. If it happens after a consistent number of cycles, the pump may be overheating. Another possibility is that the control board is intermittently glitching.

One more thing to check: when the it drains, keep an eye on the drain hose or drain pipe. Watch for any water backing up into as a drain restriction or backflow issue could be contributing to the problem.

On the Service Diagnostic mode → clock, hourglass d

On the smart install diagnostic test, got Co, HO and OE (except the E didn’t have the top horizontal line.

Can you help me understand what this means?

No water back-up with the drain hose. The problem does not seem to be associated with running multiple load.

I have not taken out the drain pump. I am hoping to avoid that.

YouTube suggested I check the water pressure sensor. Should I??

You can certainly check it, although it’s not very likely if the problem is happening intermittently.

When the issue occurs, does the washer drain all of the water, or is there still some water left in the bottom?

Here’s a copy of the tech sheet for the error code. It may provide some additional diagnostic steps and help narrow down the cause of the problem. best way to rule out the pump is tearing into.

The washer is 10 years old. I am thinking about getting a new one. What do you think?

That’s a good question.

With the washer being around 10 years old, I would compare the cost of the repair to the cost of replacing the machine and make your decision based on that. You may be able to fix the current issue, but it’s also worth considering what other components could potentially fail as the appliance continues to age.

Thanks for all of your help!

of course you’re welcome!
