Just bought a used unit for cheap but knew it had some problems to address. Cools and freezes great in both sides. Before I bought it, freezer side must have been stuck in defrost mode cause there's evidence of the heat disforming some plastic. Evaporator cover had to be replaced it was so bad. I also have to replace the fountain bracket because it is deformed along with the ice door kit. (Must have been really hot to deform this!!??)

The strange area that ice is building up is on the bottom of the outlet of the icemaker dispensing hole and on top of the freezer door ice chute area. When the door is opened, sometimes the ice buildup is enough to give resistance on opening the door.

Question - Could the insulation in this area of the door have been melted enough to let this happen? If so could I use a liquid foam filler and try to fill any void?

Here are your parts, includes a wiring diagram.
Replacement parts for MAYTAG MZD2766GEB Ref - SXS/I&W | AppliancePartsPros.com

Here is a manual although it does not list you unit as being included in the manual it is probably close.

It is a possibility. Also could be the fountain heater (item 5 in Section 3) is burned out or not getting power.

The problem with this stuff is that it sticks to just about anything.
Odds are that if you use it you will have a problem if in the future you have to work on the dispenser. Also it may expand into an area and cause a problem.

Thanks for the information. Will check the fountain heater and or control board. Sounds like I should probably remove the inner door liner and have a look at the insulation.

I took the freezer door apart. The insulation all looked fine. The fountain heater ohmed out at 1500K. I neglected to check the voltage to the heater with it disconnected but with it connected, the voltage across it was 88 volts. I taped the door switch closed and let it run for about 10 minutes then took a feel of the fountain heater. It felt slightly warm.

The control board is functioning correctly in all other aspects - unless 88 volts feeding out to the heater is inadequate. Is it?

Should the heater element have been like almost hot or very warm and is 1500K a good number?

The ice bin door 61004327 is missing. Could this be a factor.

I did notice minute air gaps around the ice chute and never saw item 61003343 insulation.

Any help appreciated.

From the syptoms, you have a shorted defrost thermostat, rather rare but it does happen. I would replace it before the next defrost.
