I was wondering if maybe the thermostat has died. The freezer stays at 48 degrees. Been that way for about a week.

Could be, if the unit seems to cycle normally re: compressor turning on/off.

You could check this by unplugging the unit, shorting the contacts on the thermostat, plug it in and give it a try.
If the temperature drops below the 48 degrees, then the thermostat is the problem.
