The dryer knob used to select dry time broke off because the metal stem behind it won't budge, even with pliers.

Obviously, I have no idea what to do next. I can order a new knob for about $20 (Alaska rates, yay) but I don't know how to get the stem to turn.

If I unplug the dryer, how do I access the inside of the panel to see what the problem is? It would seem to me that if there are gears inside maybe they are jammed somehow.

Any ideas? Any help appreciated. My clothes are wet. I am very unhappy.

I think you are going to have to replace the timer, but you need to post a full model number before we can tell you more.
