my whirlpool washer is making a thumping/banging noise when it slows down after a spin cycle. the frequency of the noise slows down as the rpm of the basket slows down. when the basket stops spinning, the noise stops as well. i can't tell if the noise is present during the actual spin cycle. it may be occuring so fast that i just don't notice it. i guess it really becomes noticable when power is cut off from the drive mechanism, i.e. the spin cycle ends.

when the basket is empty, i can turn it clockwise by hand. the banging noise occurs every 180 degrees of basket rotation. (one basket rotation = two banging noises)

this noise occurs when there are clothes in the basket and when the basket is empty.

do any of you know what can cause this?

This is an old GE washer given to me so I do not know the age. The model # is not where I can see it -probably on the back. It has few features on it- only super capacity, 6 cycle, heavy duty. When the machine agitates it sometimes makes a banging sound. It is not out of balance. Any suggestions?
