My washer is making a banging noise, I removed front cover to see the tub agitating in sync with the agitator and the overflow tube is hitting a metal suspension rod. The washer works fine and cleans fine and no problems in spin mode, could this be the infamous transmission problem?

Need more info. It's possible the motor is cutting out. See if it does this in both slow and high speed.

Thanks for your reply, the motor seems to run smooth and the belt is tight during use, my question is, how much back and forth movement should the tub have during wash cycle, mine seems extreme, was told the transmission should be applying some braking action to the tub during this cycle

Pull the belt off the tranny pulley and turn it in the agitate direction. If the tranny feels "rough" while agitating, you have a bad tranny.
