A model number may help others help you. I am assuming that everything else with the unit seems OK. Sometimes an intermittent/sticking main thermostat can cause this. It could be the defrost thermostat. This is clipped onto the evaporator coils. The defrost cycle is usually a set time but when all the ice/frost is melted off the coils the thermostat opens and cuts power to the defrost heater. Check that it is infinite ohms (open) just above freezing. Also if it looks bulged it needs replacing.
