thanks bsaucer; your response confirms my thoughts. Now the next thing is what part number am I looking for; or is there a way to fix by using washers to increase the throw of the clutch. It is a canadian model and I have had problems locating the part. I enclose a picture. thanks ajs8 attached the following image(s):

I think it's called a "basket drive and brake assembly". It includes the pulley, yoke, brake, and spin tube. It requires a complete overhaul: Lift top. Remove agitator, tub ring, spanner nut, basket, drive block... Then lay down machine and remove braces, belt, pump, gearcase, etc... It's also expensive.
