the dryer works well, but it is unusually loud, like a train running on its tracks,

You will have to open it up by taking out the two screws under the lint filter and using a screw driver to pry up the top which is held by two clips near the edge. The operate the machine and see if you can tell where the noise is coming from. If it is the motor, you will probably need to replace the dryer. If not, take it apart some more.

You can now take off the front and reach in and release the belt. The drum will come out and you can inspect the belt, tension pulley and most important, the rollers at the back.
