Hi Folks, My GE sid by sid refridgerator stoped cooling all together. I took it outside & hosed down all the dust off the bottome parts. I plugged it back in and got the same results NO COOLING in either Fridge or Freezer.

Is there a place to check refridgerant. What do you think went wrong and what steps after hosing the dust off and plugging it back in to see if that would work, should I take.

Sincerely,
Chris

Sorry to say it but hosing down a unit was not a great idea.
Water and electrical parts do not mix well.

First you have to determine if the compressor is running.
You should be able to hear it and feel it vibrating.

If it is running then remove the evaporator coil cover in the freezer and check the coils. Let it run for an hour or so.
If there is no frost on the coils then you are probably out of freon or the compressor is toast.
If there is just frost in one area on the coils you are probably low on freon. It makes no sense putting freon into the unit unless you can find and repair the leak.
With either of the above you will need a pro and it will not be cheap so often it makes more sense to put the dollars into a new unit.

Do you get a clicking noise at the compressor but it will not start. This is often the start/overload relay.

If it does nothing and seems totally dead.
Note I am assuming the interior light works , if not you may have a power problem.

Could be you are stuck in a defrost cycle, see Item 257 in Section 3 (defrost timer). There is usually a hole to let you rotate the timer cam.
Rotate the cam to see if the unit fires up.
If it does you need a new timer.

Check the thermostat. Unplug the unit, unplug the wires going to the thermostat and measure it's contacts. Should be 0 ohms.

Here are a couple good sites with basic troubleshooting help.
