I tried to start my dryer and the Timer/Knob Assembly just came off in my hand. On talking to someone, they said to try to use pliers to turn the stem, and then pull it out; the stem will turn but will neither pull out or push in. Do I need a new timer (which the stem is attached to) or a new knob? The knob seems to be in perfectly good shape; and this part is discontinued. What do you think? Thanks in advance for your help.

If you just want to start the dryer then there is a separate push-to-start button on the right side of the control panel (#81 on the diagram). The knob for the timer has been discontinued and is no longer available. Here are the breakdown diagrams and Replacement parts for WHIRLPOOL REX5636AW0 | AppliancePartsPros.comGene.

I guess it's stress or a sign of age. You're right and thank you; I was getting the washer mixed up with the dryer. Thank's for setting me straight; you're an angel! (Wish everything could be fixed so easily.)
