Sometimes when my washer fills, it will not start washing. It sits there and hums and starts to smell like wires getting hot. At times, I have pulled on the knob and it will start the cycle. Sometimes, when I raise the lid during the cycle, it will not restart unless I push the knob in and pull it out again. Last night I was doing a lot of laundry and it filled for washing and did not start. I pushed and pulled on knob and it would not start cycle. I pushed knob in and left it in. Later I went to check it, pulled knob and it started cycle and completed the load of clothes. Q: Do I need to replace timer?

Check your motor for bad bearings, or burnt windings.
