We have a Kenmore Ultra Care that has worked well for ten years. Recently my wife tried to dry tennis shoes in it. She found the dryer off, with the door open, and it wouldn't start. I checked the external supply fuse, ok, and then started googling.

At this point I've discovered that the drive belt snapped. I've checked the thermostats on the exhaust, ok, but for the life of me cannot locate the thermal fuse to check it, despite finding numerous pictures of what it should look like, a bar on a tab that should screw into the exhaust with two screws, like the thermostats. If you want to help please try to be explicit, because at this point the drum is out for the belt replacement and I still am not seeing the fuse. I've even tried to trace it using the wire colors from the wiring diagram and it just doesn't seem to be there.

Part # 3390719, I think, but that might be a generic replacement.

Thanks for any help.

I've linked a picture to help with location.

Hi,

I can't tell from your model number, but if your dryer stopped running the same time the belt broke this model may have a switch on the motor that kills the motor if the belt brakes.

The belt idler would close the switch when the belt is on. When the belt is off the belt idler moves away from the motor turning the switch off.

That makes sense. I think that I'm going to replace the belt tomorrow and see if that fixes it. And thanks for the idea.

In the mean time, I hope that if anyone else stopping by can tell me where the thermal fuse is, they'll do so. Even if this fixes it, it still bothers me that I can't find that fuse. I've checked gone over ever bit of the exhaust tube and it's just not there. Crazy.

Update: you were right about the belt idler, once the belt's replaced it runs fine. Getting the belt on was a real turkey. My trick was to take out the plastic insert that covers the left vent option, and get both hands in that way. I'm sure there's a simpler way, but wth.

The people at Sears parts were not aware of the belt idler switch. Using the picture, we still could not figure out where the thermal fuse went. Maybe an urban legend is in the offing.

Thanks again.

Glad to hear you got it repaired.

As for the thermo fuse, most often they are on the air duct.

Have a great weekend, :)
