Hi~~ I have an old WHIRLPOOL LXR9245EQ0 that does not enter the SPIN cycle (hums) until I either turn the washer OFF and then ON again (by Push/Pull on the timer knob w/o turning/advancing it) OR by lifting the lid up and then down once. Either solution works by itself, each time, and equally as well; otherwise it operates flawlessly. I eagerly await your opinion. Thanks much.

This is a tricky one that I've run into a couple of times before.
Both times it was the clutch band. When the washer goes into spin the brake cam driver catches the clutch band which spins the clutch / tub. If the spring is worn out it doesn't always catch the housing which allows it to spin freely and not turn the tub.
Because there are other parts of the clutch that could possibly cause this I'd go for the entire clutch assembly if I decided to make the repair.
Please note that I am speaking from experience in running a used appliance store. Theoretically there are other things that might cause this, I just haven't seen it happen. Please don't purchase this on my advice alone if you are going to be angry if it doesn't work.
Cheers

Your machine has what is caused a neutral drain. When the machine drains, the transmission is in neutral, so that it is not trying to spin with a full load of water. Once the timer has operated the drain long enough so that it thinks the water is drained out, the timer will stop the motor for a few seconds. This will cause the transmission to shift into spin mode. In your situation the timer is not doing this pause, so the machine never goes into spin mode. When you open the lid or push in the timer to stop things, this creates the pause that causes the transmission to shift into spin so that you can now get the spin cycle. You will probably need to replace the timer, but before you do that I would spin it fast a fair number of times. Sometimes this will loosen up things so that the timer will now go into pause. If this does not fix things try replacing the timer, this part here. Of if you don't want to spend that kind of money on this machine, just remember to raise the lid. It might even fix itself after some weeks or months. Part number: AP3019073
